If running X on a computer is tricky, it's nice to have a correctly booting CLI OS and then install/config X, rather than trying to install X directly through the installer and either having to do trial and error installations or bust back in via chroot. I use network installs for that reason, and so I can a-la-carte pick what does and doesn't go on my computer.
