The reason was that systemd was still installed on my system after the upgrade, along with sysvinit. After removing systemd, I still had a couple of systemd related packages: ii libsystemd0:amd64 215-17+deb8u4 amd64 systemd utility library ii systemd-shim 9-1 amd64 shim for systemd There weren't any dependencies for systemd-shim, so I got rid of that. libsystemd0 is needed by acpi-fakekey and sane-utils. I got rid of both. The latter is related to using a scanner. I notice my laptop won't sleep on closing the lid anymore. Oh, and 'man init' now returns the correct page.
