dmesg says it has detected the device and lsusb shows an entry as well but I
can't seem to find a device in /dev.

What should I be looking for?

Just install jmtpfs.

Thanks,

jmtpfs MOUNTPOINT

cd and copy files as required

followed by:

fusermount -u MOUNTPOINT

worked with my Samsung Galaxy J1 (provided tethering was switched off, which I haven't yet succeeded in getting working under GNU/Linux).
