Hi Steve, 

although I don't consider myself an advanced WindowMaker user, if you
post a list of problems you encountered using it, many people here
might probably help you, and the result can potentially become a (yet
another) short tutorial on WindowMaker.

Concerning hotkeys, for instance, what you have to do is just to add
your preferred application to a menu and associate a shortcut to
it. This can be done in WPrefs, under the tab "Applications Menu
Definition".
