This must be one of those "different cultures" things that can crop up with dispersed discussions. I'd never have though of your interpretation, to me it would mean "compare" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cf.) Though when looking that reference up, I see that to some people it could refer to Cystic Fibrosis - but get down to page 2 (am I the only one that goes past page 1 of Google's results ?) and it could also mean "Climate & Forecast".
