Thanks for reminding me about apulse. I remember a discussion either on the 
list or irc recently.  I'll try it if it ever gets into the devuan repos or 
someone builds a deb for me.  I haven't tried installing something from source 
in years and IIRC, wasn't that successful at it.   I once built a deb using 
this tut but I don't know if it's out of date (from 2009).

For the moment, I'll either deal with pulseaudio (disgusting) or maybe try 
running the windoze version of avidemux in wine, (The Linux qt version is not a 
pretty sight. Unfortunately, no more gtk version . . . bummer).
