To sum up (because I've been helping him off list too): It looks like he had old versions of setuptools and XCode (from OS X 10.4, running 10.6). I think once XCode gets upgraded, he should be OK... assuming MySQL is actually installed...
As for ZMySQLDA: SourceForge features the most release of any project files, and that happens to be the latest one. I'm planning to spin off ZMySQLDA into a separate project, because I don't work on it any more; John EIkenberry is developing it now.
