I don't think you can say either is better as their approach is quite different. I'd probably put myself in the same skill level as you and I've found both to be useful for different reasons. They're more complimentary than competing, although Practical Django Projects now does have a slight edge in that the recently released second edition is aimed at Django 1.1.
