Thanks for the hint - but that was not the case. I do have custom ModelForms, and the relationship fields are there, very explicit. So I suppose they would only get overriden intentionally. I'm starting to think that my customer sometimes keep more than one browser/tab open, and inadvertently updates the wrong one, overriding the other, or something like that...
