The "Django project" sounds like Django itself, and it is untrue that it's last release was in Aug 08. I take it you mean the Google app engine helper for Django, as opposed to the app engine patch. Neither of these projects is more closely tied to Django than the other, so far as I know. One (the app engine helper) may be more closely tied to Google, as it has Google employees listed among the project owners.
