If it were me, I'd try/use/provide feedback on the patch on the existing ticket that provides the function I need. Plus do what I could to move that ticket toward getting integrated. So far as I can see there is no objection to providing what's requested in that ticket, but the patch has no test. Providing a test would likely go a long way to improving its chances of getting integrated in a reasonable timeframe (though probably not before 1.1, as I would consider this more new function than bugfix).
