There certainly isn't anything official to report. Adding support for SimpleDB, CouchDB, Google AppEngine, HBase, or any other non-SQL data source is on the "nice to have" list, but not a current development priority of the core Django team. For a list of the current development priorities, see the v1.1 feature list [1] However, this is a volunteer project - if anyone wants to contribute a non-SQL data backend, we're only too happy for their contribution. If integrating a non-SQL backend requires changes to the Django core, we are willing to entertain any well explained proposal.
