I would disagree, any developer worth his salt is already likely to be on multiple mailing lists, especially if they are just checking out django and not already using as their primary development platform. Forums are an absolutely nightmare as soon as you need to be on more that one, mailing lists all have the same interface (your mail client) and this scales rather nicely for when you are members of more than one community.
If a mail interface is going to put off a developer, then simple things like actually learning and reading are also likely to put off said developer, and they will never get anywhere anyway.
