I run a few Django sites on Dreamhost and the only problem I've ever had is that you need to get support to raise the Apache softlimit or you'll get a 500 error. Have you tried using the MySQL backend? I've never used Sqlite on Dreamhost, but MySQL with the mysql_old backend always works.
