Update on this: the problem was in sys.path: this must contain the directory where the models.py file is located. So, progress.
BUT, now I get the error 'Import Error, could not import settings', and for some reason it claims it can't find the mysite.settings module. Again, I am stumped -- why would it fail to find that when it clearly exists?
