It might be wise to consider separating the Python environment from Mac's Python using MacPorts. I have a recipe for installing a Django dev environ on Intel Tiger at: http://shinmaikeru.blogspot.com/.
I am relatively new to Mac and Python (and Django, of course), but this was the only way to get things working comfortably.
