Just after sending the last message, I found this: http://www.djangosnippets.org/snippets/555/ It seems to be doing pretty much exactly what you're after, with the Activity Bar-style and all. I haven't tried it out yet myself, but it looks nice, I think I might have to give it a whirl myself. Glad I could help someone, this community has helped me a lot in the past!
