as you mention later in this mail, django is a special case. There  
are *only* two apps I run directly from a svn checkout and not  
through apt-get on my debian servers. One is django and the other is  
trac - since I needed the latest and no package was available when I  
installed that. I think that once 1.0 comes out, the devels will then  
standardise the file structure and have best practices for the  
plugins etc etc - then, and only then, would I recommend apt-get for  
django.
