Remember views are Python functions. Take a look at http://www.b-list.org/weblog/2006/nov/16/django-tips-get-most-out-generic-views/ ("Getting more out of a generic view"section). and http://www.pointy-stick.com/blog/2006/06/29/django-tips-extending-generic-views/ The key word is the "extra_context" argument of the generic views.
