I'm not 100% sure exactly what your question is, but it appears that you do need to upgrade to the svn version. The backwards-incompatible changes are documented in excruciating detail here: http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/BackwardsIncompatibleChanges If you read the svn version of the documentation on the website, you should be able to get your ImageField working.
