Very sorry, I wasn't having the problem I thought I was having. I still don't know why the traceback was switching to the old installation of Python, but at any rate the real problem was that it couldn't find the settings module - my DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE and PythonPath had an overlapping file-path segment. Never mind!
