Ah, looks like you are hitting an incompatibility between the new template variable resolution system (went into revision 6399, on 9/20) and the comment-utils code. It's been reported against the comment-utils project:
http://code.google.com/p/django-comment-utils/issues/detail?id=13 ubernostrum notes that yes comment-utils needs to be updated but he's waiting to make sure the new API has settled. In the meantime there is a (very simple) patch for comment-utils posted on that page that you can try to see if it fixes your problem.
