Some additional info. I zapped my django installation and reinstalled from svn from scratch. I still had the problem.
I tar'd up my project and moved it to a CentOS 5 box running 5631 and I do *not* experience the problem there. The two salient differences between the machines is that the problematic one is running CentOS 4.4/Python 2.3.4 and the CentOS 5.0 box is running Python 2.4.3 and also happens to be running X86_64.
