No - this is one area where Django could certainly be improved. The only suggestion I can give you on hunting down errors of this kind is to fire up the ./manage.py shell, and try manually importing the module that appears to be generating the error. This should give you the full stack trace, and give a slightly better indication of the source of the problem.
