Hi Christian. I've tried a few hosting setups in the paste year with various degrees of success too. I've never been able to get a good, stable fcgi setup myself.
In the end I've settle of webfaction. They have a very good setup with you own apache instance + mod_python, and it's very affordable. Great support as well. If you need more control, meaning root access, a VPS will probably be your best bet.
