That's why I like to recommend "Learning to Program" http://www.freenetpages.co.uk/hp/alan.gauld/ Alan Gauld assumes the reader knows little to nothing about programing and uses python to ease them in. There are also a few javascript and VB samples interspersed for comparison, but the main text stands on it's own without them, so you can just ignore them if you want.
