I would suggest trying one of the patches in ticket #2070. There seem to be two sets of patches in there now (Øyvind Saktvik's ones and Joakim Serbrant's ones), but having somebody disconnected with the ticket try things out and provide feedback would help, I suspect. This is not a trivial problem (there are lots of edge cases), so working on top of what Øyvind and co have already started is bound to be easier and help us all.
