Thanks for the comments - I think I get it now... I have a file context_processors.py where I added the function, then the line in settings.py for TEMPLATE_CONTEXT_PROCESSORS, and all seems to be working now. I was trying to make this fit into my previously ingrained idea of using cookies to pass global info around, and it wasn't making any sense. As a great teacher once said: "you must unlearn what you have learned!"
