This is a huge religious debate that's probably not suited for this list. I'd suggest reading the numerous topics available about this across the net. Usually the best threads are in database specific lists, like lists.mysql.com
In those lists database admins usually jump in and speak their mind on the issue, which gives you another perspective on the issues at hand.
