Thanks for your suggestions Ilya. >From the apache side of things my serveAsset function is not called when the page is viewed from an iPhone/iPad. But it works fine from a browser on a computer.
I changed to using the URL tag. I really can't work it out at the moment. I wonder if it is some configuration on the mac os x server that is running the django app related to mobile devices?
