Think I now have this working with the following:
def get_queryset(self):
self.kwargs['pk'] = self.kwargs.get('pk', self.request.user.id)
UserModel = get_user_model()
profile = UserModel.objects.filter(pk=self.kwargs['pk'])
return profile
