The error message says that you have not added "django.contrib.auth" to INSTALLED_APPS in your settings.py, as far as I can tell. However, I have no experience of Django on app engine. App engine uses a customized version of Django, since App Engine does not support relational databases. This "django-nonrel" (non relational) may not behave in a way compatible with the tutorial, I don't know. If you are just starting with Django, I would stick to a more standard Django setup.
