Try something like this:

import os
abspath = lambda *p: os.path.abspath(os.path.join(*p))
PROJECT_ROOT = abspath(os.path.dirname(__file__))
[...]
TEMPLATE_DIRS = (abspath(PROJECT_ROOT, "templates"),)
