I started learning Python and Django at the same time. That was a bit of a challenge for me, with the Django template language having slightly different syntax. Soon after I started I had to get a project out fast, so I went with Pinax. Pinax helped me learn more about Django (and Python). It felt complementary to me.
Python knowledge and an undertanding the MVC pattern will help tons. Good luck!
