http://www.djangobook.com/en/2.0/chapter01/ discusses what a web framework is, and why/how it might offer you more productivity just using "raw" Python (bearing in mind that most of the time, apart from the HTML templates, you *will* be using Python anyway).
You cannot "see" a sample app because apps are meant to be used as part of a project; if that is what you meant, then look at http://www.djangosites.org/ for example of such projects. http://pinaxproject.com/ is a good example of a project that integrates multiple Django apps and is, itself, designed to be customized further. If you are building websites that fit into the domain space that it covers, you'd get a boost in productivity from not re-inventing some wheels.
