django.core.context_processors.media adds MEDIA_URL to the context, and is in TEMPLATE_CONTEXT_PROCESSORS in global_settings. OP has overridden his TEMPLATE_CONTEXT_PROCESSORS, and not included django.core.context_processors.media, which is why it is unavailable. He doesn't need to write his own context processor, he needs to include the ones that are included by default.
