Look at the Celery project ( http://celeryproject.org/ ) to be sure it fits your needs. You can easily integrate with Django by using https://github.com/ask/django-celery .
You could also use a signal, listening for a request_finished, which will run the task inside a Thread. Here's a concrete example of that: http://www.artfulcode.net/articles/threading-django/ .
