I wrote it using vi on the ssh shell!

Is it possible of such a thing occuring

I followed Jeff Croft's directions and they worked for me (on Dreamhost Alvarado)

Just a wild guess: could your django.fcgi have non-Unix line-endings (e.g. if
you had created/edited it on Windows).  That might cause the script to fail
silently.
