I agree when it comes to a gui based environment. When developing with django, a gui is really not necessary. You can start the vm and treat it as a remote server and log in via ssh and do your work that way. It runs 100% better or just run a 'local' terminal for the vm and work that way. VM's used this way are great for emulating your production environment (most configuration and settings) and on a 3-4gb system you can have 3-4 vm's running concurrently for testing using multiple servers (i.e. db, static media, and your django install) having a smaller (compared to production) but more complex setup that you can find in a lot of situations.
