Be serious, Adrian! :-) There are reasons against this approach, but "it seems like magic" doesn't seem like one of them. It's a pretty standard approach to password changing and gives a clear indication when you need to process the data: it's non-empty. I mean, we're assuming the user is up to speed with computer technology and this is the admin page, not even a Joe User entry point, so the barrier for appearing to be magic is a little higher than a password box, I would hope.
