I don't know why the URL dispatcher doesn't support subdomains. If I were to guess though, it would be that supporting subdomains and virtual hosts is typically the responsibility of the web server. I think Django didn't want to enable folks to do in python what apache and nginx already do so well (and in a more optimized way).
