OK - managed to fix this myself... In the inline_searchinput.html file, add a line after the section of code that starts:
$('#lookup_{{ name }}').autocomplete('{{ search_path }}', { extraParams: { 'search_fields': '{{ search_fields }}', 'app_label': '{{ app_label }}', 'model_name': '{{ model_name }}' }, with: inputClass: "vForeignKeyTextAdminField", You can use any name, of course - but the same name should be used in your .css file. I found that a styling of width:85% gave a suitably large display for showing a long text entry...
