Thanks Malcolm, I thought people must have solved this problem. I just didn't realise what the ContentType field was.
I also found Luke Plant's tagging app (http://groups.google.com/group/django-users/browse_thread/thread/a7cbd4fd843583be) in which he has a GenericForeignKey, but I'll investigate the core version first.
