You need to be more specific -- what breaks?

As far as I know it isn't possible to customise where they appear, apart 
from 'by accident' by changing the ordering in the list of fields on 
the admin.

I don't know of any way to do this.  It is possible to customise admin 
and provide your own (additional) stylesheets though, which might do 
what you want.  (there are some docs somewhere about styling the 
admin).
