Hi, I've had good results with using ImageMagick to generate thumbs (in my old PHP system). It can handle a lot of file types (images, pdf, postscript, fonts, text etc. etc.). It's available for Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, Mac OS X and Windows. I think Python binding are available, but you could also use popen.
