Seems to me it looks like a bug in the m-r branch. django/db/models/query.py, line 430:
was: if "." not in col_name and col_name not in [k[0] for k in (self._select or ())]: should be: if "." not in col_name and col_name not in [k for k in (self._select or ())]: for k[0] will be the first letter of the key in self._select, not the key itself.
