Always a good thing :)

security in mind from the start.

On reflection, I definitely overlooked this--if someone were to come up and ask me what forum software is good to use (and this has happened before, actually) I honestly wouldn't know what to suggest other than "phpBB, but make damn sure you patch as often as you can, and hope you don't get cracked in the interim".

5. most 'community' style applications would need a 'forum' component.
having one which is directly pluggable into the django way of doing
things would allow easier integration with other django components
like for example a review and rating component, or a tagging
component, or a CMS component.

so ideally if this actually came off, and was usable I can see
developing other 'parts' to a generic 'community' application which
could be use. (in django)

If you pull this, Robert's and Luke's comments together, I think there's definitely enough meat to more than rebuke any devil's- advocate opposition to such a project :) In fact, if done properly, I daresay it could become a real powerhouse in the online forums world (inertia of PHP and its assorted products/hosting support notwithstanding).

I haven't had the time/need to play with the existing Django code that Adrian mentioned, aside from noticing it here and there in the source, but like he says,

Writing a basic forum app is easy. The hard part will be integrating
*all* the various features that people want.

which brings us back to everyone else's comments. Anyway, like before, I'd be glad to help when I have time.

Looking forward to more discussion and *gasp* maybe some actual work,
Jeff
