I don't know that I would call it hacking around. Yes. There seems to be a lot of stuff within the admin that is not exposed outside of the admin. Manipulators will act accordingly if given formfieldcollections for "inline" tables; however, they aren't exposed outside the admin as they should or could be. I have been working on some stuff to expose this functionality and have it working but it isn't ready for prime time.
