To my understanding, the IE can be set, per policy, to render all intranet
pages in "compatibility mode" (IE7?), which seems to cause problems with
modern CSS.
In my tests,

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">
}}}
fixes the problem.
