I see three approaches here:
1. Close as "Won't Fix", as mentioned as possibility in initial comment
here.
2. Accept the BC change, with deprecation/migration path.
3. Break out the permissions aspect of `ModelBackend` in order to make it
pluggable.
The pain of 2 makes 1 more appealing.
